Case Study: 138 Cheapside Project
Client: Whitepaper
Location: Opposite St Paul’s Cathedral, London, UK
Joinery and Installation: Object Atelier
Project Type: Commercial | Bespoke Office Furniture

Project Overview

Located directly opposite St Paul’s Cathedral, 138 Cheapside offers a premium selection of fully refurbished, fully fitted office spaces across the part 2nd and 4th floors, ranging from 3,223 to 13,128 sq ft. Designed with flexibility and modern work environments in mind, the interiors are open and bright, catering to the evolving needs of businesses seeking both functionality and aesthetic appeal.

Design Vision

Object Atelier was tasked with designing and manufacturing the bespoke furniture throughout the space. The brief was clear: create a contemporary and calming atmosphere that aligns with the high-end nature of the building while promoting a sense of comfort and ease in the working environment. The design incorporates warm timber, khaki tones, and natural oak, creating a harmonious blend of modernity and warmth that invites productivity and collaboration.

Key Design Elements

The focal point of the project lies in its custom-made furniture, which includes a range of functional yet visually appealing pieces designed specifically for the space.

  • Furniture selection: a range of bespoke furniture pieces was developed to integrate seamlessly with the office’s overall aesthetic. Light grey tables create an elegant contrast against the warm oak, adding a touch of sophistication. The custom reception desk aims to make a lasting first impression, ensuring visitors are immediately welcomed by the space’s refined design.

  • Co-working areas and shared spaces: co-working areas, open meeting pods, and shared spaces are designed with functionality and comfort at their core. These spaces feature carefully selected materials and layout considerations to support flexible working, foster collaboration, and encourage a sense of belonging.

  • Bespoke features: Object Atelier’s work included designing key elements such as the tea point, tea point island, high bench, Zoom rooms, and banquette seating. These bespoke pieces were crafted from oak veneer with a clear lacquer finish, ensuring both durability and elegance. The use of Hi-mac’s solid surface for the tea points and island adds a touch of sleek, contemporary styling to the kitchen areas.

  • Kitchen area: the kitchen area was designed in a Japandi style, offering a serene, minimalistic focal point that complements the surrounding office space. The clean lines and functional design of the kitchen tie into the overall theme of subtle luxury and simplicity.

Collaboration and Results

Working closely with Whitepaper, Object Atelier was able to deliver furniture that balances the needs of modern office life with the timeless appeal of high-quality craftsmanship. Whitepaper’s collaborative approach ensured that the vision for 138 Cheapside was executed flawlessly, resulting in an office that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing.

This project reflects a blend of flexibility, comfort, and high-end, modern office design, creating an environment where both individual productivity and team collaboration can thrive.
