A Warm Welcome in the Heart of the City

Nestled within the striking architecture of the Scalpel Building in London’s financial district, Red Lion Coffee offers a calm and grounded retreat for those seeking moments of stillness in the city. Known for serving some of the finest specialty coffee in the area, Red Lion’s newest outpost is a refined yet inviting space, shaped by a close collaboration between owner Chris Mckie and Object Atelier.

From early morning flat whites to quiet afternoon breaks, the shop balances the energy of Lime Street with a tranquil interior that feels both timeless and personal.

Design Approach

The design vision was simple: to create a space that felt natural, warm, and connected - without losing sight of the shop’s urban surroundings. Working with Chris Mckie, Object Atelier helped realise this vision through a restrained material palette and carefully crafted details.

At the heart of the space is bespoke Siberian larch joinery, made by Object Atelier, bringing texture and richness to the interior. The wood’s soft grain and warm tone add a sense of comfort and permanence, drawing a gentle contrast with the steel and glass of the Scalpel’s exterior.

Crafted Interior by Object Atelier

Object Atelier’s contribution to the project is felt throughout the space. From handcrafted counters to custom shelving and seating, each piece is made with  elegance that speaks to the studio’s commitment to craftsmanship and natural materials. The furniture is intentionally understated - supporting the space without overpowering it - creating an environment where coffee, conversation, and connection take centre stage.

A Sense of Stillness

Greenery softens the space and the layout encourages guests to linger, whether for a quick espresso or an unhurried meeting. The result is a space that feels rooted and human, offering city dwellers a place to pause and reset.

Legacy and Atmosphere

Since opening, Red Lion at the Scalpel has become more than just a coffee stop - it’s a landmark in the bustle of the City. The partnership between Red Lion and Object Atelier reflects a shared belief in quality, care, and the value of well-made spaces.

Whether you're a regular or a first-time visitor, Red Lion invites you to slow down, take a breath, and enjoy something beautifully simple.
