Year Completed: 2020
Joinery and Installation: Object Atelier
Project Type: Residential Interior | Bespoke Joinery
Design, Craft and Nature
Set along the windswept Kent coastline, Woven House by Giles Miller Studio is a contemporary residence defined by its immersive relationship with the surrounding landscape. Designed to foster a sense of unity between people and place, the home uses materiality and light to create a seamless connection with nature.
Object Atelier was invited to contribute to this vision through the design, manufacture, and installation of key joinery elements, including the kitchen, a sculptural kitchen island, and integrated storage throughout the home.
Material Contrast with Purpose
Object Atelier crafted a series of dark, refined joinery pieces that contrast with the surrounding wood, becoming visual anchors within the light-filled spaces. The joinery fronts were fabricated from ash veneer and finished in black paint - a treatment that preserved and celebrated the natural grain, allowing the timber’s unique character to emerge through the surface.
This interplay between light and dark created a sense of depth within the space - enhancing, rather than interrupting, the architecture’s calm and considered tone.
Details
Every element of the joinery was crafted with a focus on tactility and human experience.
The handle design features rounded forms that provide a contrast to the joinery’s clean lines.
Each time a drawer or cabinet is opened, it reveals a moment of warmth - deep walnut interiors that contrast beautifully with the blackened ash exteriors. These thoughtful details add layers of discovery, creating a home that invites touch, interaction, and appreciation over time.
A Refined Approach to Contemporary Living
Woven House is more than a residence - it is an expression of how contemporary design can be rooted in its environment while remaining effortlessly refined.
Object Atelier's joinery plays a subtle yet essential role in this vision, blending craftsmanship, natural materials, and thoughtful design to create a home where both function and a true sense of comfort coexist.
